Even in this era of modernization, people still have misconceptions about us singles. We (especially the ladies) are assumed, and even accused, of being fussy about choosing a partner and being too career-driven to settle down.
Never mind the (obvious) fact that divorce rates, particularly among the 20- to 30- year-olds, are getting higher than ever. It’s always “When are you getting married, ah?”
Even strangers ask : “Dah kahwin ke belum?” (Are you married?)
And then there are those who “itch” to become matchmakers: “That so-and so’s son is an engineer now. You know him, you used to play polis entri with him when you were young.”
Or, “There’s a guy in accounting upstairs whom I know is perfect for you.”
It does not matter if one is incompatible or perhaps uncomfortable with the “match”, all the counts is that one should get married.
Being single doesn’t mean being lonely and alone. Has it ever occurred to these people that the single sometimes would rather stay single and happy.
In the wise words – “Marriage is a great institution, but I’m not ready for an institution yet.”
